Choosing the right ACT Test Prep program for your student is a significant investment—of money, energy, and time. With so many choices and promises in the test prep market, it’s important to look beyond marketing headlines and promises and ask the right questions to find the best fit for your student’s needs and reality.

The ACT is changing as of September 2025! Schedule a free consultation now, to find out what you need to know!

Here’s a list of recommendations we’ve compiled after 17 years invested families ad students through ACT Prep and 26 years in the Tutoring and Coaching industry:

Start with the End In Mind: What is the Goal?

Before exploring programs, have an honest conversation with your student:

  • Is the goal a higher score for college admission or scholarships?
  • Greater test-taking confidence?
  • Assistance with neurodiverse learning needs: Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Autism, ADHD, Anxiety/Depression?
  • Strengthening study habits that will last into college and beyond?
  • Essay or common app help included?

By clarifying these goals together, you’ll be better equipped to evaluate which program aligns with your priorities.

Cost, Time, and the Fine Print: What to Look For

  • Cost: Test prep costs range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on the format (group, online, private coaching) and features.
  • Guarantees: Some programs promise “4+ points improvement” or money-back guarantees. Look closely at the requirements:

    • Often, these guarantees demand upwards of one hour of work per day for 12 weeks—almost 100 hours. Is this feasible with sports, classes, jobs, and family time?
    • Some guarantees require perfect attendance, completion of all assignments, or regular progress check-ins.
  • Instruction Method: Determine how your student best learns and choose accordingly:
    • Is the program live (in-person or virtual), self-paced, or hybrid?
    • Are materials digital, paper-based, or both?
    • Are there opportunities for individualized feedback?
    • Will your student actually use the resources provided, or will they gather dust?
  • Company Experience: Established programs bring years of expertise. Ask how long the program has been offered and about their results beyond just score increases—do students report greater confidence or long-term benefits?
    • Who are their test prep coaches and how are they trained?
      • Some companies boast that their coaches have scored 35+ on the ACT – but can they TEACH?
    • What kind of personality does your student’s favorite teacher have? That’s what you want in a Test Prep Coach.
  • Total Time Commitment: Some less expensive programs might look like a bargain—until you learn the time commitment is immense. A “guaranteed increase” may require nearly 100 hours, while programs with more experienced instructors or smarter frameworks could require as little as 20-30 hours for similar results.

Table: Comparing Typical Test Prep Program Features

Feature Low-Cost Program Premium/Custom Program
Hours required 80-100+ 20-30
Format Mostly self-paced Live coaching + self-paced
Materials Mainly online Online, print, interactive
Guarantee Score increase with conditions Customized goal setting
Student fit Independent learners Students needing structure/support

Tip: Sometimes, a higher initial investment in a premium program actually saves valuable time—allowing your student to focus on all of their other priorities.

Involve Your Student in the Decision

Ask your student:

  • How much time per week can you realistically set aside given your other commitments?
  • In what format do you learn best?
  • Would you benefit from coaching, or do you thrive independently?
  • Are you motivated to stick to a daily schedule, or would a more flexible approach be better?
  • What kinds of goals, reminders, and accountability do you need between sessions?

Programs only work if the student is engaged and the workload fits into their life. Remember that what looks ideal on paper may not be realistic in practice.

The Value Equation: Short- and Long-Term Gains

Look for programs that offer more than just test prep:

  • Do they teach test-taking strategies applicable to any exam?
  • Are there lessons on time management and executive function skills?
  • Do students learn how to schedule, track progress, and reflect on growth—skills that matter in college and professional life?

By evaluating cost, fine print, delivery methods, company reputation, and—most importantly—fit with your student’s reality, you’ll make the best possible choice.

Remember: when students are invested, supported, and working within their capacity, that’s when real growth happens. And those are the lessons that last.
