Dear Parents,
Can you make sure your kids get this note? I haven’t figured out the snap-chat or tik tok versions yet, but I’m working on it. Thanks a million for your help.
Last week’s closing left this message to our students:
The answer is within YOU. And I can point you in the right direction, but you’re going to have to take the next three steps. Don’t overthink it; just schedule it. And if you need help doing that, ask for it. You’ll need 15-30 minutes.
You can find the full blog here:
This week we’ll move on to the next three steps:
- Use The Wheel of Life to create a List of Your Roles in your life
- List: What Would a “10” Look Like – You at Your Best – In each of these roles?
- Use the descriptions you wrote to Set Your Vision for 2021
Use The Wheel of Life to Create A List of Your Roles
You have roles you play in your life: student, brother, sister, teammate, employee, student. The categories on The Wheel of Life fit into the different roles that you play. For example, you are all students, and you are all children (no matter your age) to your parents. The categories on the wheel of life that would fit into these roles may be family and home environment. If you have a job, the category “money” would fit into your role as an employee.
Some basic roles you may find are: family member, student, personal, friend, teammate, musician, artist, or athlete. Pick 5 of those roles that make up the way you spend your time, and list them.
What Would a “10” Look Like – You at Your Best – In Each of These Roles?
Now that you have your five roles listed, write what you would be doing to achieve a score of 10, meaning you are completely satisfied with how you feel in each role. Be as specific as you can: this is you as your best self.
Now Use the Description to Set Your Vision for 2021
You have created a list of what “your best” looks like in each role that you play. Now use the list to create a set of statements that will serve as your vision. Be specific as possible. Use the concept of SMART to help you make your goals Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound.
Example: Soccer Teammate
I am a teammate who arrives on time for every practice and game. I stick to my core values of sportsmanship and team play, and I model those actions to my teammates. I check in with at least 3 teammates each week to encourage and compliment them. I am seen as a leader and a candidate for team captain next year.
After completing these steps, you have a vision of WHO you want to be in 2021. And you can refer to this vision as you plan your week. Pick the same time each week and spend 20-30 minutes writing (or typing) in your scheduled activities or reviewing your calendar. Then use your roles and your vision to add in activities that get you closer to achieving your vision. You’ll find that you are able to practice referring back to your vision for each activity throughout your day.
Get started, and don’t overthink it! Every step you take is progress toward freeing yourself from distraction and overwhelm and laser-focusing your activities in becoming the best YOU.
I look forward to hearing about your progress. Parents and students, we want to hear from you!
